Whenever I meet students or welcome new hires, I always start with a simple gesture: I hold up three fingers.
I tell them that on the surface, we are all identical. We all have the same 24-hour currency to spend every single day. Each finger represents a block of 8 hours.
I fold the first finger: 8 hours for sleep. I fold the second: 8 hours for work. And the last one: 8 hours to design your life.
On paper, we’re equal. But here’s the reality check.
I often ask: “Who here, while putting on their shoes in the morning, genuinely thinks, ‘Wow, I can’t wait to get to work!’?”
The response is usually a heavy, cynical silence. Most people think it’s a trick question. They assume that “hating work” is just a standard part of being human.
But here is the “Ahaalife” perspective: If you don’t find a way to make those 8 hours of work “frictionless” and meaningful, you aren’t just losing a third of your day—you’re poisoning the rest of it.
Misery has a spillover effect. A toxic 8 hours at work creates a toxic 8 hours of sleep. Anxiety follows you under the sheets, turning your rest into a restless wait for another day you dread. That’s 2/3 of your life down the drain.
Then comes my second question as I hold up that final finger: “Who wakes up and thinks, ‘Wow, another day to build a life worth living’?”
Silence again. People start to realize: “Wait, I’m not actually happy when I wake up.”
So, here is my final challenge to you:
Are you ready to get serious about designing those 8 hours of work so they are efficient, joyful, and productive?
Are you willing to use your remaining 8 hours to craft a journey so legendary that years from now, you’ll have zero regrets?
And most importantly, is your sleep truly peaceful?
I’ll leave these questions for you to answer. Find your own truth, or join me at Ahaalife.com. I’m documenting my own journey of life design there—maybe you’ll find the raw materials you need to build your own.
It is my honor to share this piece of the puzzle with you. Thank you for listening.
