A Monday morning on Phú Quý island. I was swimming in clear, cool water. My companion – a man living at ease, with a happy family and the grounded calm most people only dream of – looked up: “After all these years, look how much we’ve learned.”

An offhand remark. Yet it held the whole view of success I have been searching for.

Real success is not self-satisfaction over what you have achieved. It is a posture: wherever you stand, however much you have gathered – keep placing yourself in the seat of a student who has just begun.

I love the image of the empty cup. A full cup takes nothing more. Keep yours half empty and you notice how small your knowledge is. That smallness is the gift: the moment you accept you still have things to learn, doors open at heights you never imagined.

There was a stretch when I thought I knew a fair amount. I listened less then, was less curious, and lost the freshness of living. A person who believes he knows enough stops where he stands. A sincere student keeps finding something new in every person he meets.

What I love most is where it leads: peace. As a student, I no longer measure myself against anyone, no longer punish myself over goals not yet reached. It taught me to be gentle with myself, too. Old mistakes are not failures – only hard exercises in the school of life.

Forgiving yourself is where all real happiness begins.

I choose to set my ego down, to take in what is best from the people around me, from my own small mistakes and small wins each day. Because a life worth living is not measured by what we hold, but by the lessons we carry in our soul.

Ahaalife – A life worth living.
