ONE LAST DAY: THE ZEN MASTER’S JOLT

I once had a conversation with a Zen master for whom I have profound respect. My admiration didn’t stem from the fact that he once accurately predicted the passing of his parents a year in advance, but rather from his razor-sharp understanding of life—the kind of wisdom you carry with you like a compass.

In the middle of our talk, he dropped a question that felt like a bucket of ice water:

“If you had only one day left to live, what would you do?”

I froze. At the time, I was young and fueled by massive ambitions. I had just stepped into a major role, managing five departments and over 1,000 employees. For me, everything was just beginning; the climb was in full swing.

Stuttering, I replied: “I’d call my family. I’d say my goodbyes. I’d thank everyone who helped me along the way, and I’d ask for forgiveness from those I’ve wronged.”

The master smiled—a calm, knowing smile—and said:

“The people you just mentioned? They are the ones who give your life meaning. But life is impermanent. It’s a flowing river that could change course at any second. Don’t wait until the clock is about to strike zero to show love to the people you cherish or to apologize to the ones you’ve hurt.”

His final lesson hit home: “The secret to a life well-lived is simple: do it today. Do it every day.”

Design Your Now

That conversation changed my internal blueprint. It added a new layer to how I build my life, and I hope it does the same for you.

Don’t treat your life like a dress rehearsal for some future performance. Stop waiting for the “perfect moment” or the “final day” to be a decent human being or to show gratitude.

Start designing your life worth living—right now, while you’re still breathing, while the sun is still up.
