Friends and Soulmates

This morning, I sat at a coffee shop with two old friends. Amidst the casual banter, one suddenly sighed, “Why is it that as we get older, we have fewer friends?” The other nodded immediately in agreement, “Yeah, that’s so true.”

I looked at them both and fell silent in thought. That holds true for all of us. As time goes by, we may accumulate millions of acquaintances, but the number of truly close friends can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

In truth, this is a natural law of life. As we grow up, everyone’s standards of living branch off into distinct directions, and our energy “frequency” shifts accordingly. Those who no longer share the same perspective or mindset will naturally drift apart. Only those on the same wavelength can find each other and remain closely connected—just like the three of us in that coffee shop this morning.

The rest are merely social acquaintances, or sometimes relationships built on mutual exchange. Human life, at its core, is a journey of filtering such connections.

So, if you realize your list of friends is growing shorter, don’t be sad. It is entirely normal. It simply proves that you are beginning to appreciate the true value of the word “friendship.” Those who stay will gradually become your soulmates. That number may be very small, but it accounts for most of the meaning and brings the vibrant colors of happiness to your entire life.
